Best low-light plants for apartments

Find forgiving greenery for rooms with gentler natural light.

Low light is not no light

Houseplants need light to grow. A room with a window and gentle indirect daylight can support some tolerant varieties; a windowless room usually needs a suitable grow light. In lower light, expect slower growth and less frequent watering.

Start with tolerant favourites

Snake plants and golden money plants are often forgiving choices for indirect light. Peace lilies can tolerate lower light, though flowering is more likely with brighter indirect light. Keep all three away from harsh afternoon sun while they adjust.

Check pet safety before choosing a plant. These favourites can be harmful if chewed or swallowed, so keep them out of reach of pets and young children.

Find the right spot

Place a plant where it can see natural daylight, not in the darkest corner just because it fits. Rotate the pot occasionally for balanced growth. If growth becomes weak or stretched, try a brighter position gradually.

Dust leaves gently with a damp cloth. Check the soil before watering, because a low-light plant often uses water more slowly than the same plant beside a bright window.
